How to Scan a QR Code on Android

Step-by-step instructions for scanning a QR code on Android using Google Lens or the Camera app, plus fixes for common Android-specific problems.

Updated July 11, 2026

Android's QR scanning story is slightly less uniform than iPhone's, because "Android" covers many manufacturers (Samsung, Google, OnePlus, and others), each with its own camera app built on top of the same underlying Android platform. The good news: nearly every Android phone sold since roughly 2018 can scan QR codes natively, without installing anything extra — it's just accessed in one of a couple of slightly different ways depending on the phone.

How to scan a QR code on Android

  1. Open the Camera app from your Home Screen (on most phones) or open Google Lens directly if your phone has a dedicated Lens shortcut.
  2. Point the camera at the QR code and hold steady.
  3. Look for a link preview or banner to appear on screen, or tap the on-screen QR/Lens icon if scanning doesn't start automatically.
  4. Tap the preview to open the link in your default browser.

On Pixel phones and most recent Samsung, Google, and stock-Android devices, the Camera app detects a QR code automatically and shows a tappable link chip — no separate action needed. On some other manufacturers' camera apps, you may need to tap a small QR-code icon in the corner of the viewfinder to switch into scan mode explicitly.

The universal fallback: Google Lens

If your phone's default Camera app doesn't scan QR codes automatically, Google Lens works as a reliable universal method on virtually any Android device, since it's built into the Google app (pre-installed on nearly all Android phones) and Google Photos. Open the Google app, tap the Lens icon in the search bar, point it at the code, and tap the link that appears. This method works consistently across every Android manufacturer.

Manufacturer-specific notes

  • Samsung (One UI): open Camera, and if QR scanning isn't automatic, check that "QR codes" is enabled under Camera settings > More settings > Scan QR codes.
  • Google Pixel: QR scanning is automatic in the default Camera app — no setup needed.
  • Other manufacturers (Xiaomi, OnePlus, Motorola, etc.): if the Camera app doesn't scan automatically, Google Lens (above) is the most reliable fallback and works identically regardless of manufacturer.

Android respects the link exactly as encoded

Whatever URL a PXLA QR code contains, including the https:// prefix PXLA QR adds automatically, is exactly what gets opened. If the destination looks wrong, check Wrong Destination — the cause is almost always in the original URL, not the scan itself.

Common Android-specific scanning issues

  • Camera doesn't recognize the code at all — try Google Lens instead of the default Camera app; scanning behavior genuinely varies more across Android camera apps than it does on iPhone.
  • Link chip appears but tapping does nothing — check that a default browser app is set (Settings > Apps > Default apps > Browser app); some custom ROMs or heavily restricted work profiles can block this.
  • Scans slowly or requires very precise framing — this is more often a symptom of a small or low-contrast code than a phone problem; see our printing guide and troubleshooting article.
  • Opens in an unexpected app instead of the browser — if you have an app installed that's registered to intercept certain link types, Android may route it there by design, not as an error.
Do all Android phones scan QR codes the same way?

Not exactly — the default Camera app's behavior varies by manufacturer. Google Lens, built into the Google app, works identically on virtually every Android device and is the most reliable fallback if your Camera app doesn't scan automatically.

Why does my old Android phone struggle to scan QR codes?

Native, automatic QR scanning in the Camera app is a relatively modern feature. On older Android versions, install the Google app (if not already present) and use Google Lens, which supports a much wider range of Android versions.

Is there a setting that disables QR scanning on Android?

On Samsung devices specifically, check Camera settings > More settings > Scan QR codes. On most other manufacturers there isn't a dedicated toggle — if scanning isn't working, Google Lens is the fastest way to confirm whether the code itself is the problem.
